On Thinner's sublabel Autoplate we find a very nice compilation of more experimental music, which includes some known Autoplate conspirators, such as Gultskra Artikler, Off The Sky, Tlon and Marsen Jules, but also known outsiders such as Mitchell Akiyama, Osso Bucco, Novisad and Flim. The music is less oriented around rhythms and more about experiments and ambients, such as the almost classical approach of Infra Red Army. This compilation is a very fine introduction in the world of experimental, glitchy music that is somehow warm and intimate. Great work and all free for download. (FdW)click here for more reviews

You can either turn the music down and concentrate on something else or turn up the volume loud and jump right in. The first strategy will make the sounds creep slowly into your brain and root there. The second strategy will earn you a great pool of sounds and complex and introverted sound-designs formed into tracks. All about de-accelerating time and making us look deeper into the sounds of the now than hurrying from one shallow beat of the future to the next. (We are missing so much on a daily basis, it actually doesn’t matter anyway, so why bother?) Nature evolves slowly, the light of day takes twelve to sixteen hours to get by (depending on where you are, and in some places the sun doesn’t set at all), so who invented the three minute format for music? If I think about the things worth living for, I only get to music after quite a long list of things: love, friends, family, nature, eating and drinking, sleeping, sex, and so on. There is a lot worth living for and thinking about how and for what I spend my days will make me cry, so I rather not think about it too much. Maybe the whole issue of this compilation is to make us sit back, relax and think about what to do with our lives. In the meantime the music will creep in on us, soothing us with atmosphere and sounds somewhere between experimental ambient drones, postrock and even some new age to be honest (some months ago I decided my life is too important to lie about anything).
More and more I read that internetlabels are the future of music. If it is labels like Autoplate and music like the one collected on “Many things worth living for” I am all in favour of that. Anyone can download this compilation plus a lot of other stuff; that is great. I am a constant visitor at their website (and also of Thinner-record, who they are cooperating with), I admit. I am afraid though, that not a lot of people will listen to this music as intensely as it should be nor even like it. Well, you can’t do more than offer it for free, can you? Because Autoplate works mainly in the realms of experimental electronic music, ambient drones and songs that are so intricate, minimal and special, that they require some work from the listener. For the twentieth release on Autoplate has compiled this here great compilation. You might know some of the artists on here (Mitchell Akiyama, Flim, Novisad, Hans Appelquvist) but most you won’t. And it doesn’t matter too much, because the tracks all seem to work together very closely in a most fascinating way.
Slow movements, slow dynamics and building of sounds that make little things and changes sound like enormous eruptions. E.g. when the drums set in after five minutes of “Cocon” by “Krill.Minima, leading the layers of keyboards and digital manipulations towards the echoic exit of the track, which takes another two or three minutes. This music is so introverted and busy doing nothing except looking in on itself, that the listener actually has to draw it out into the open to get it for real. Other tracks take no longer than two minutes to rise, glow and go down again, e.g. “Lofty Gomez” by Silent Q, which reminds of those longwinding genius tour de force-instrumentals by Godspeed! You Black Emperor, but then decides to take the easy road off and just stops. Among the other artists are Mitchell Akiyama, who has released a great CD on SubRosa as well, Osso Bucco, Novisad, Hans Appelquvist, Flim and a handful of others. I won’t describe each track now one by one, because after some time the music starts to flow into one another, leaving the feeling of watching the tide roll in or the clouds go by. (The only one who does grand things without asking for a reward is nature itself.) “Cage” by Infra Red Army has to get a worthy mentioning nevertheless, for its couraged and interesting take on John Cage’s art, and it is not 4’ 33” this time, which I am sick off, actually. It is always the most obvious work or idea of an artist that gets traded the most, while the really interesting work they do gets lost or rots away in some old dirty cabinet, the modern word for which is internet.

Сетевой лейбл Autoplate выпустил этот сборник в надежде показать всему виртуальному миру, что они есть, что они живут, что они даже эволюционируют, движутся. Вышло немного нелепо, но показной сдвиг в стилистике был достигнут. Никакие два трека с компиляции нельзя впихнуть в рамки какого-либо одного электрического стиля; ещё более многогранные записи будут характерны для Autoplate в будущем. Наряду с прописанными музыкантам, сформировавшими направленность лейбла на некую авангардную электронику, чтобы смягчить местами радикальный звук, было добавлено несколько резидентов с других лейблов, с основного Thinner’а, кёльнского Tomlab’а и шведского Komplott’a. Общий звук непонятен и как бы интересен, менее жесток и стерильно сладок.Tlon “Subways” — очередной пример того, как ритм колёс современного транспорта может быть искажен в голове художника и выплеснут на холст треков музыкальной программы. Что делать из окружающих нас звуков ежедневности? Музыку, с ненатуральной урбанистической гармонией. Трек пробежал, повибрировал воздух, но атмосфера ничуть не изменилась.
Krill.minima “Cocon” – любитель минимал эмбиент техно получает ещё один завораживающий, развивающийся сочный кусочек пластмассового звука. Крючок впился в кожу, леска больно опутала руки, и беглые мысли.
Konrad Bayer “Kumulation” – сэмпл одного ситарного аккорда на фоне софтварных синтезаторов и скромно басящих слегка-африканских ритмов. Яркий пример компьютерного графоманства.
Silent Q “Lofty Gomez” — мягко и нежно усыпляет, скороговоркой еле различимых голосов поправляя непросветно-невесомое одеяло скукоты.
Marsen Jules “Serenade” волнообразными звуками по частям втягивает внутрь, закрывает дверь и, мягко напевая, обьясняет принцип интересного эмбиента.
Infra Red Army “Cage” – из акустических звуков минималистических произведений Кейджа музыкант филигранно собирает мозаику звуков, яркий коллаж из красно-жёлтых нот. John Cage is still avantgarde’2004.
Flim “Meet Me In C#” хрупкие скромные звуки складываются в улыбчивую скромную мелодию. Наполненый детской простотой и наивностью трек, беспричинно резко переходит в минорные растянутые тона и тихо погибает. Что это? Рентгеновский снимок чужой жизни?
Roland Fiege & DFO “Exchange” простая обычно-красивая и скучноватая компьютерная песня без слов. С ожидаемыми спокойными местами и такими же секундами, лёгким брейкбитом постукивающими.
Mitchell Akiyama “Wonder Coma” медленно разваливающийся снежный комок, подрагивающе-трясущийся внутри артиста. Холодный кусок яркого льда, трогать неприятно, но солнышко весело подмигивает на поверхности. Растаявши, трек становится акустическим и чётко собранным.
Gultskra Artikler “Kosmolet” — музыка без точки опоры, без мелодий и осознанного бита. Случайная и хватающая. Неосязаемые голоса издалека, мягкий шероховатый шум и ноющее изображение в воздухе. Возможно, один из самых интересных проектов в современной музыке, давно упёршейся в стенку, стучащей в стенки разного цвето, но всё равно кирпичные.
Hans Appelqvist “Full the Moon”. Очень талантливый шведский музыкант, как всегда очень театрален. Этот трек, как старый фильм ужасов, nosferatu 1922 года, чёрный и белый, быстрый и пугающий, не отвернуться от экрана.
Osso Bucco “Four Walls” — робкий и нерешительный эмбиент, серый и безликий. Скромно пощёлкивающие случайные постукивания и акустические звуки с реверберацией, золотой стандарт электронного настроения.
Off The Sky “Through Her Isolate Divide” — эмбиент от айдиэма, с затянутым приветствием и тихим грустным брейкбитом. Давно уже выжатый апельсин, но всё ещё оранжевый местами.
Lufth “Instant Magnetic” — всё тот же сонливый звук биосферы, без проишествий и событий. Как ежедневные телевизионные новости редко когда оставят что-либо после, так и эта прозрачная музыка проходит мимо, как и задумывалась.
Novisad “07”. Однослойно и минимально наполняет стакан. Это всё. Конец музыки. Просто саунд-дизайн, рекламная заставка.
Космолёт починили и все засобирались в путь. Все наши друзья и новые друзья наших старых друзей сели в космолёт, написали на борту APL020 и звуком растворились в головах.

Название второго сборника - "Есть много вещей, ради которых стоит жить" - по сути, не очень точно отражает его дух, потому что подчас жить просто не хочется. Но именно этот факт и радует больше всего.Из отрицательных характеристик - много повторений вроде изрядно надоевшего idm с всевозможными приставками (post-, neo-, шмео), а также депрессивно-мелодичной электроники, которой и без стараний Autoplate вокруг полно. Но остальное, то, что в эти характеристики не укладывается - весьма сносно. Порадовал проект Infra Red Army со своим неординарным посвящением Джону Кейджу. Любопытное полукино "Full The Moon", нарисованное Хансом Аппельквистом - прекрасный трек, завораживающий! Заслуживает внимания также издевательски-добродушная "Meet Me In C#" ("Встречаемся в До-диез") проекта Flim. Но самое главное, самое потрясающее и удивительное - трек "Kosmolet" проекта "Gultskra Artikler", за которым стоит сибиряк Алексей Девянин. Вообще, его музыка стоит того, чтоб посвятить ей отдельную публикацию, поэтому пока распинаться не буду.
Представьте себе функцию x=4y, проще говоря, прямую. Это и есть "Bauhaus comp." C функцией "Many Things..." дела обстоят посложнее - хоть ее график извивается вокруг той же четверки, однако его трудно описать таким простым уравнением. И в этом - неоспоримое превосходство перед Баухаузом.

Wer einen Überblick über das zukünftige Schaffen von Autoplate haben möchte oder sich für ambiente Musikforschung interessiert, der sollte sein elektronisches Herz mit der Compilation „Many things worth living for“ (www.thinnerism.com) verkabeln. Hier wird die behutsame Klangverarbeitung auf höchstem Niveau gefördert und harsche Töne sucht man vergebens. Pure Entspannung und Kopfkino ist angesagt. Manchmal denkt man, dass diese wunderbaren, filigranen Schallwellen nicht von dieser Welt sein können.http://www.triggerfish.de
