i like to listen!
compilations are usually dedicated to rather special moments – like in this case, where things are set to celebrate the 50th release of the netlabel “thinner”.
on this compilation you’ll find some renowned thinner-artists (who have new material in the pipeline for 2004), and some new artists, for which the compilation offers a fitting frame to groove themselves into the brains of the listeners. musically, the intercontinental voyage starts with jason corders “serotone”; a crisp minimalhouser that works with funky guitar licks interacting with chimes. digitalis from bern/switzerland give us a window-clear preview with “china hope” for their upcoming thinner album for 2004. martin jarl, johan fotmeijer and johan skugge are members of the swedish mitek posse around mikael stavostrand. besides the upcoming releases by fotmeijer and skugge on thinner, they have new albums and 12′′ in the pipeline for this year.
dialogue from bern have just released on trapez, and because of niels jensen as a reknown artist on thinner, it was about time to welcome his “dialogue” alias on our label. benfay hits the bang with his dry-rocking “em33”. we’ll see whether his thinner-album in february will become as uncomprimising as this clean submission. from northern ireland we welcome tristen polar on thinner, who will have a bigger ep 2004 after a string of upcoming 12′′s on wellknown minimalhouse labels. his submission “model citizen” is a tracked-orignal “splatterhaus” cut, how tpolar uses to categorize them. for this track he cooperated with clive kells.
selffish is a bit more laidback with lots of cycling effects,in this concrete, piece “cheer up” while eloi brunelle sets the floor with “honeygroove”. accordingly pheek dives into more functional deep sea with his hommage to neuchatel, station of his european tour in summer 2002. it’s a pleasure to see dennis desantis on thinner again after a while, same as we welcome joerg schusters project “sensual physics”, after his other other appearances being digitalverein and lufth. finally the circle is closed by krill.minima from dortmund, whose rather lush, delayed vocal-whispered track “sleeping or awake” is dedicated to more intimate moments.
dear listeners and supporters, thank you for a great time so far and enjoy us on our canada/north american minitour in march.

that′s it! the netlabel which started on the internet 2.5 years ago celebrates its 50th release! thinner invited its usual artists but also new ones... here is the full list: jason corder, digitalis, johan fotmeijer & martin jarl, johan skugge, dialogue, benfay, tristen polar, selffish, eloi brunelle, pheek, dennis desantis, sensual physics and krill.minila. we are not going to detail each title of "i like to listen". simply know that most of the producers appearing here already released records for labels like kanzleramt, k2 o, force inc, trapez, morris / audio, konvex-konkav, resopal, mitek, source records, etc... as you can see, solid references that easily explain top quality of the 13 minimal techno / house tracks. that′s enough! run onto thinnerism.com to download this essential compilation (available on january 26th). one more thing, there′s no need to use soulseek or emule, it′s free and in 192 kbps mp3 format! anything else to say? yes, thanks thinner!!!

thinner is one of the more serious net labels which in the past two years have been giving a fresh impact on contemporary dance music. for two and a half years they′ve been seriously treating the dance perspective on contemporary electronic music inspired from the dub influences. from the very first release the quality which they want to imply through the production and the precisely conceived design is evident. with all the 50 releases behind them they split the most contemporary dance music in which the dub revival sound concept is implemented, fusioned with tech house, techno, trance, ambient... constantly treating new but high quality artists, they′ve created a serious background in the new dance culture.the thinner compilations are released for special occasions, while each of them marks the period and the sound at the time. this compilation is released so as to mark the 50th release and at the same time to define the sound that this label will treat in the next period.the sound is once more that organic dubby sound, only this time with a clearer and more precise dance production which is evidently the new phase in the development of the thinner sound. completely dance oriented, the new thinner sound is potentially the most contemporary dance floor sound. produced by the already established artists, and a few new ones, the material of this compilation is the sound which these artists with their ep′s and lp′s, are getting ready to place through thinner in 2004.nice pleasant journey through the most contemporary sound at the moment with the thirteen new tracks for the thinner artists. generally a minimalistic experience which is described best through the phrase contained in the headline. keep (listen) this work for (in) the most intimate moments regardless of whether you are on the dancefloor or at home.

on the current compilation “i like to listen” they show off their taste and the label-rooster as a celebration to the 50th release on thinner records. so, if you have been looking for electronic music somewhere between dub and minimal house, with straight grooves and basslines, uncompromising and lush keyboard-sounds and effects, or everything between club-sounds and electro, thinner is definitely your place to spend some time. if you play this compilation loud, you’ll get a cool and relaxed dancefloor going. not exactly setting the roof on fire, but a mature form of grooving dance that will last through the whole night. if you play the cd on a lower volume, you’ll get even more relaxed and laidback lounge-grooves that are as deep and soft as your favourite cushioned sofa. the perfect sound to accompany a lonely evening reading a book or to kill the emptiness in every dinner party. all of the tracks presented work on small changes of sound and atmosphere, or rather, on the evolution of a certain sound, and not at all at hectic changes and rapid breakbeats. most of the artists on “i like to listen” range in the underground / never heard of them before-category, but are worth listening to. dialogue aka niels jensen might be known to some harcore-minimal-house-fans, because of their release on trapez, but that is about it, at least in my knowledge. dennis desantis “dig button” is one of my favourites due to its uncompromising eighties-funk-beat and the hacked-off vocal samples that give the track a mysterious edge, like finding yourself alone and feverish in a dark corner of a neon-lighted downtown disco in the eighties. a little discomforting, but who cares, the world is about to end anyway. another highlight is krill.minima’s “sleeping or awake”, due to its rainy atmosphere and the vocals, the only track with vocals, by the way. most of the participants stay within the instrumental range and don’t try any big experiments, at least not on this compilation.
