gary spence, working as t-polar, is no stranger to the thinner netlabel having graced listeners with his own unique and adventurous brand of dub, house, and funk variations twice before with his “tonal soul” ep (2004) and the full length “red machine” (2005). the four-tracks comprising “procession ep" are no exception to his unique repertoire of releases which include other virtual albums such as “citezen ep“ (electrotoxic), “boobcube ep” (epsilonlab), and “butterducky ep” (red led) along with several physical releases including “escort girls” (12”, modernism), “department of stealth” (2 x 12”, morris audio citysport), and “splatter-haus” (12”, karloff) in addition to having his tracks appear on numerous compilations and mixes on labels such as thinner, archipel, electrotoxic, site records, sonicwalker, and zerinnerimg.
one listen to “procession ep" and it’s clear that t-polar demands that his music not only be danceable and listenable, but also just plain fun. indeed the atmosphere conveyed is one of am entertaining evening at a club absorbing the steady succession of energetic sounds while in the company of like-minded friends and strangers.
the ep begins with the hazy murmur of chatty voices on the beat-laden “boppers union” where looped vocals, smooth pads, horns, and funky keyboards get the album off to a lively start. continuing the relaxed mood of the previous track, casually conversational voices once again appear on the “procession” followed shortly by the staccato of dubby chords, organ-like keyboards, vocals, drum beats, and the reassuring sounds of a receptive crowd.
featuring beautiful looped vocals and ethereal keyboards, “satellites” continues the ep as powerful bass lines and steady, complex beats establish a foot-tapping funk-infused rhythmic backdrop. the pace slows and the atmosphere mellows slightly as the down-tempo “i got time” concludes the ep. processed vocals and rich, fluid chords initially greet the listener before shifting keyboards, looped background vocals, heavy bass, and solid beats make their appearance.

lange genug durften wir ja warten, auf das neue thinner-release. doch wir werden dafür auch um so mehr belohnt.gary "t-polar" spence aus irland überrascht mit einem wervollen neuen release. er sorgte ja einige mal für wunderschöne klänge auf thinner und electrotoxic, seine vinyl-veröffnlichungen und besuche bei anderen netlabels mal nicht mitgerechnet.
funk, house und dub vermischt er gekonnt zu einem klangteppich der für die zukunft viel erhoffen lässt. leidenschaftlich wird bei ′boopers union′ das keyboard mit smoothen pads und geloopten vocals zu einem "gute-laune-track" gekoppelt. genauso gekonnt verbirgt sich hinter ′procession′ ein relaxter und deeper lounge-burner, der auf seine art unterhaltsam die bar mit verfremdeten stimmen unterhält und gerade beim konsum eines leckeren cocktails dubbig unterstützt. lecker!
′satellites′ führt das werk dann wieder zu funkigem house, der rhytmisch und zurückhaltend die ambient-floors am meisten beeindrucken wird. ganz smooth zieht er sich ins hirn und hinterlässt mit großer raffinesse einen ganz entspannten eindruck und öffnet die türen für den letzten track ′i got time′. ganz chillig geht es dem ende zu und ich persönlich finde das sogar schon fast den besten track dieser hochqualitativen veröffentlichung. downbeat pur für den sommergarten, oder auch schöne stunden im kaminzimmer - bei einem guten buch, vom sommer träumend.
