after an absence of far too long, benfay makes a welcome return to thinner. his last appearance on the netlabel was in january 2005 when he teamed up irish singer alice mackay on the “lighthouse ep” [thn068] delivering four tracks of vocal minimal house. now, two and one-half years later, he’s back with “born on a houseboat” where the houseboat is a metaphor for a “floating community sharing a love for one style of music.” the style here is nearly a half-an-hour’s worth of delicious beat-laden grooves and urbane minimal house contained in four tracks.

concerning the general flavor of the sounds, you’ll find traditional stab chords and pads and danceable beats generated with an analog drum machine. in addition, benjamin says that he’s working with the imperfections of “human microgrooves” and blending the “digital domain with warm analogue dirt” often running sounds from digital virtual instruments through a sequence of analog devices.

“breaching the escarp” which means “breaking through the precipice” (referring to ben’s hobby of climbing) begins with a staccato melody which benjamin says sounds like a “doggerel.” but when the high hat enters and the stab chords and drum machine beats come in the groove on this piece takes off and there‘s no going back. the sound of a tire rolling on sand initiates “phlegmatic face” tinting it with some scratchy vinyl warmth. a melancholic dub ambiance coupled with a steady beat and a continuous bass line speckled with watery droplets of melody give the piece an overall carefree, “rolling through life” mood. the sad tone of “phlegmatic face” is quickly overtaken by the sugary summertime grooves of “nimiety of energy.” wavering pads and a solid high hat impart the feeling of a warm summer breeze while simple melodies played on miniature carl orff instruments bring a touch childlike playfulness. benjamin’s personal favorite is “quick drifter” - a slow-moving piece of minimal house loaded with stab chords, hot synthesized bass lines, catchy rhythms, and clever breaks.

thinner es el primer netlabel que conocí, hace ya varios años… yo diría que cuatro, y en todo momento han mantenido un nivel de seriedad en su organización y calidad en sus referencias realmente envidiable. con un estilo muy definido se han hecho respetar tanto o más que muchos sellos comerciales. benfay es un viejo amigo de thinner, house elegante, con toques minimaloides y muchas muchas ganas de bailar. disfrútenlo con una buena caipirinha!!

the cliche of techno and electronica producers being knobfiddlers with scant theoretical knowledge, unaware of the term “score” outside of baseball and mistaking a “minor key” for something small to open your door, has long been dispelled by a large league of classicaly trained instrumentalists, who have set foot in the genre. benfay is one of them: free jazz was his first obsession, learning the semantics of seven (!) instruments his second. it was only during his college years that the interest for djing and the associated musical styles was developed, but the passion has proved to be a lasting one. “born on a houseboat” picks up his mutual loveaffair with the thinner netlabel and allows spectators a look at the man’s philosophy: the dry house beats develop a pure and mellow groove, quirky delayed sequences hover in the air like melodies whistled by friendly fireflies on jupiter and chords are filtered organically to create spaceous, warm harmonies. it is an extremely positve and optimistic music, true to the roots and with an open ear for innovation, both futuristic and intimate. if you listen carefully, you will find the bass to be the guiding light – its warm resonances providing a deep, maternal sensation. benfay is correct in claiming that it is not instrumental expertise which matters, but a creative mind to connect the pieces of the puzzle into works, which remain recognisable, yet are able to do without endless and tiresome references.

thinner ostatnio bardzo pozytywnie zaskakuje, gdyż w ciągu kilku miesięcy opublikował dość interesujące kawałki nowych, jak też znanych już muzyków. najnowszym wydawnictwem jest epka "born on a houseboat" wracającego po krótkiej przerwie benfaya. te cztery utwory nawiązują do wcześniejszych standardów techno, zaglądając w jego minimalistyczną i transową zarazem odmianę. kontynuują i przedłużają więc zakończone już chyba poszukiwania muzyków pokroju holy ghost, maurizio bądź model 5000. gdzieś tam można odnieść wrażenie że ocieramy się o house, a po chwili dobiegają do nas przypadkowo niby wygenerowane kliki. w międzyczasie otrzymujemy porcję celowo wygenerowanej niespójności i niedokładnego sklejenia struktur w tempie, oraz niskiej, dubowej wręcz linii basowej. najbardziej do gustu przypadły mi "nimiety of energy" oraz triolowy "phlegmatic face". ich przestrzeń zapełniona jest rozmaitymi padami zahaczającymi nieco o tak bliskie mi transowe klimaty. natomiast "nimiety of energy" zagląda troszkę w okolice bardziej poważnego progresywnego house-u. jednak mimo to, cała epka jest konstrukcją dość luźną, niezobowiązującą i przyjemną. dzięki temu potrafi zainteresować, jak też zrelaksować świetnie zapełniając dźwiękową przestrzeń w trakcie codziennych czynności domowych, czy też powrotu z pracy/szkoły/imprezy.
