obviously reaching the century mark in any endeavor is a milestone and is cause for celebration. in the case of netlabel thinner, it′s release number 100 and this calls for a compilation to celebrate this special occasion. and there′s another reason to celebrate - the compilation also marks the relaunch of the thinner netlabel. so here′s an opportunity to hear an aural digest of thinner′s past and present and to have a glimpse into it′s future. a most fitting way to bring this year to a close and serve as an impetus for the new year.

simply titled "100", the compilation brings together thirteen artists who exemplify the thinner sound. many of the contributors are renown thinner artists and/or have strong associations with the label, and several artists have only recently made their first appearance on the thinner. whether established or new, each of these artists does his part in epitomizing what thinner music is all about while, at the same time, etching themselves into the minds of the listeners as they dish out an assortment of top-notch electronic music embodying such genres as dub (and its many dub-inspired manifestations), minimal house, minimal techno, and unique fusions of dub, house, and techno. an assortment of ambiances are to be found here ranging from laidback lounge to dance-floor friendly.

veer gets the album off to a modish start with some classic dub that includes spoken word and vocals. calming things down with some slow-moving, bass-laden, atmospheres, daniel blomqvist presents his experimental take on the traditional dub sound. tracks 3 - 6 show thinner′s more minimal techno side not only with contributions by veteran thinner artists unit 21 and benfay but also a collaboration between jason corder and pheek working together as social system and new face to the thinner roster, one daniel herrmann performing as trace, who dishes out some strong vocal-laden techno. sensual physics sets the mood for tracks 7 - 11 which delve heavily into the minimal/deep house sound featuring well known artists brian kage, epsilonlab label founder eloi brunelle, and das kraftfuttermischwerk not to mention a track from the mysterious recent thinner newcomer laura palmer. as "100" nears its conclusion, off the sky and gyges present a rather unclassifiable track of crunchy, laidback experimental environments before the album makes full circle and transitions back to the signature thinner sound of the beginning with a closing piece by deluge who has composed a beautiful track of organic dub accentuated with acoustic samples.

so celebrate along with thinner as it reaches a new landmark in it′s existence by downloading "100" and immerse yourself in the thinner experience.

Thinner′s back with a deep bang. The eternal label has reached the magic release number 100 and dropped a various artists compilation with many thinner-veterans aboard. And yet every track is deep like a fragment broken from solid primitive rocks. Starting with the slow-moving smart interpretation of classic dub by veer, this release is getting deeper with every track, drifting into more abstract minimalism with Benfay′s ′Let me avow′, touching the rings of deep-house (check out Brian Kage′s foorburner ′Zebes′ :-) and finally closing with superb abstract ambiendub by Off The Sky vs. Gyges and deluge. Highly recommended!

One hundred releases are a proud number for any record company. In the netlabel world, it’s an unprecedented success story. The history of thinner is a long and winding road. It started in the earliest days of the internet with communication channels like “#trax” and bizarre file formats, stormed through the heydays of the mp3 revolution and discharged into a bright future with great music and lots of meaningful content. So, while there’s every reason to stay in the moment and celebrate “100”, the latest digital sampler from thinner, there’s already a lot to look forward to: The integration of high-quality downloads for a small fee to allow artists to financially benefit from their music, the relaunching of the autoplate site as well as the thinnerism blog with inquisitive and journalistically demanding interviews and articles, for example. And for everyone who hasn’t visited the thinner labelsite for a while, the new design has been more than worth the wait – clear, elegant, slick, futuristic and functional, it raises the bar extremely high in terms of usability and aesthetics. So does the music – again. “100” is a release which few others would even consider offering to the public for free and which would make for an absolutely stunning vinyl release which I’d order blindly. To mark the occasion, a lot of the artists which have made the past seven years or so such an agreable time are part of the package –some of them family members since the earliest days and others recent additions. As always, the stylistic outreach is both eclectic and coherent: Trace keeps the tension simmering with a hypnotic slow-trance raindance, benfay (whose first release with thinner dates back to 2001!) explores the space between echo and tribal minimalism, while others contrast dub with adjacent genres: Unit21 mix it up with warm house, Sensual Physics whisk it with sensous synth chords and quirky bleeps and Daniel Blomqvist slows it down to a drugged heartbeat. It is not the individual track that define something new. Rather, the combination of well-known elements with unusual, but completely organic styles which awards a sense of excitment to “100”. Even an experimental vocoder fantasy like “Polaroidmanteaux” by Jason Corder’s Off the Sky and Gyges does not seem out of place here, but makes for a great post-orgasmic musical cigarette. It is the grand finale “The Crush”, though, which takes the biscuit (or the cake, whatever pleases you most): A roots-reverie full of sentimental allusions and heavenly guitar pluckings, this is a a picture postcard from a place where time stands still and the wind blows gently through the leaves of the palms. Raise your glasses, let’s toast to another 100 releases!
