wize dubs
featuring contributions from old and new thinner collaborators, "wize dubs" is a collection of tracks of the album "dubwize" by gabriel le mar, released january 2009 on thinner and tailored for the dub inspired clubber by combining different playful approaches of dub, framed within the functionality and stringency of techhouse music. this remix album reflects on the story of dubwize from different angles, as for each tune the original songs are deconstructed and mixed differently. overall the collection spans a wide range of moody remixes, from abstract excursions over functional floorkeepers and detached sentiences.
the opening mixes by octex and daniel blomqvist are rather experimental perspectives upon ′dubster′ and ′motorace (dub mix), both dissolving and the elements of the original tracks with shifting beats in a rather submerged dubstep corset. following this comes the nova bluez mix by das kraftfuttermischwerk, remixing nova bluez in a loungey environment, managing to provide aural satisfaction.
a string of functional mixes is opened by the mix of p. laoss, who renders ′seasonal dub′ into a deep and uplifting house version, which ascends between the poles of sunken dub house and textural landscapes. max cavalerra, on the other hand, offers a more minimal technoid approach on ′funkstern′, which centers around a deep stab which gradually disappears in a tunnel.
with the remixes by the echonomist and subsonic park the compilation goes deeper. the echonomist goes back in time and builds his mix of ′love dub′ on a groovy house chord sequence from previous days, while subsonic park offers a journey to a distant location somewhere between deep techhouse and dubtech.
having arrived there veer picks the listener up with his tracky, sequenced twirl of ′seasonal dub′, which leaves enough headroom to unfold the funky blowers of the original. afterwards marko fürstenberg launches a most gorgeous rocket to spaced out dubspheres with strong detroit reminiscences, where there is indeed ′time for everything′ as indicated by gabriel′s original song. finally, motionfield lets us exhale with a natural ambient version of the beatless version of dubster.

Ich habe Gabriel Le Mar immer in die seichte Chill-Ecke eingeordnet. Weiß selbst nicht so richtig warum, denn einige seiner älteren Veröffentlichungen kreiseln immer noch in meinem Player und wollen so gar nicht sacht sein. Aktuell habe ich hier das auf Thinner erschienene Download-Album «Wize Dubs», welches wieder wie ein Puzzleteil zum großen Le-Mar-Sound passt.
Es ist Downbeat, dennoch tauchen viele 4-4-Takt basierte Tracks auf, die eine ganz eigentümliche Art und Weise besitzen, wie sie nur Wenige beherrschen. Mir fällt da auf Anhieb nur Guardner ein, was aber um Himmels Willen kein Vergleich sein soll. Sowieso ist «Wize Dubs» gar kein richtiges Album, sondern eher eine Remix-Compilation.
Trotzdem erstaunlich, wie gezielt die bearbeitenden Künstler (u.a. Subsonic, Octex, Veer…) Le Mars Original-Tracks eingefangen haben und man sich eigentlich fragt, wieso eine stetig durchpurzelnde Bassdrum so selten in Downbeat-Produktionen zu finden ist. Als hypnotischer Taktgeber sorgt sie nicht nur für einen ausgeglichenen Rahmen der einzelnen Tracks sondern schreit förmlich nach einem Einsatz in Bars & Lounges denen Downbeat sonst zu lasch und DeepHouse schon zu heftig sind.

Pendant longtemps Thinner fût le symbole des netlabels, proposant régulièrement des réalisations de qualité. C′est toujours le cas, mais depuis un an ces productions sont devenues payantes. Et Gabriel Le Mar avait été un des premiers artistes à inaugurer ce tournant dans l′histoire de cette plateforme de téléchargement avec un album intitulé tout simplement Dubwize. Soit neuf morceaux assez colorés et d′obédience trance-ambient-dub. En voici les remixes, selon une tradition bien établie dans le milieu. Parmi les intervenants, on citera Daniel Blomqvist, Max Cavalerra, Veer, Marko Fürstenberg et Octex ! Chacun apporte sa touche personnelle aux originaux sans en dénaturer la substance qui reste fondamentalement groovy. Des nuances subtiles, donc, qui n′excluent pas pour autant des approches plus "space" avec Das Kraftfuttermischwerk ou plus deep-tech grâce à Echonomist par exemple. On notera aussi la signature de Subsonic Park, le nouveau projet ambient-dub de Gabriel Le Mar et de son complice Alex Azary.
